Should You Use Steroids to Treat a Child’s Cough?

Steroids can be helpful medicines for certain illnesses, but they aren’t always the best choice—especially for something like a cough without fever. Here’s what you should know about the risks of using steroids in kids for short periods, usually less than three weeks.

What Are Steroids?

Steroids, or corticosteroids, are medicines that reduce inflammation (swelling). Doctors sometimes prescribe them for serious problems like asthma attacks. However, using steroids for a cough that isn’t caused by fever or inflammation may do more harm than good.

Risks of Short-Term Steroid Use in Kids

Even when used for less than three weeks, steroids can cause side effects. These include:

  1. Upset Stomach and Vomiting: About 1 in 20 kids may experience stomach issues or throw up after taking steroids.

  2. Behavioral Changes: Steroids can make some kids irritable or hyperactive. Around 5% of kids experience mood swings.

  3. Trouble Sleeping: Steroids might keep your child awake or disrupt their sleep.

More Serious Risks

Studies show that even short courses of steroids can lead to rare but serious problems:

  • Infections: Kids on steroids are more likely to get infections like pneumonia or sepsis (a serious infection in the bloodstream).

  • Bleeding in the Stomach: Steroids can increase the risk of stomach problems, like ulcers or bleeding.

  • Adrenal Suppression: Steroids can affect how the body makes its natural stress hormones, leading to temporary problems if your child gets sick or injured.

Should Steroids Be Used for a Cough?

For a cough without fever, steroids are usually not necessary. Doctors may recommend them if the cough is linked to asthma or another condition where inflammation is a big issue. But if the cough is from a cold or something similar, other treatments—like honey or a humidifier—are safer options.

When to Talk to Your Doctor

If your child’s cough lasts longer than 3 weeks, or if they have other symptoms like wheezing or trouble breathing, it’s time to check with your doctor. They can decide if steroids or other treatments are needed.

The Bottom Line

Steroids can be helpful for some serious illnesses, but they come with risks, even when used for a short time. For most coughs without fever, simple remedies like honey, hydration, and rest are the better way to go.
